A pile of gray cats wearing tutus

window display boutique La Vie en Rose Montreal
A couple days ago, I was walking down Ste-Catherine street in Montreal, and noticed this neat window display. I've always been interested in the design aesthetics of commercial windows and love to see creative displays.

This one, from La Vie en Rose, stopped me right in my tracks: a pile of gray cats wearing a purple tutu under mannequins. I wonder what was the inspiration behind this one and what's the message (if there is one). Also why did they chose purple as opposed to pink in their color scheme? (La Vie en Rose loosely translates to Life in Pink in French) Why the ballerina shoes in the back? Why the cats?

In any case, window displays sound like a fun job, especially if you get "carte blanche". If given the opportunity to design for La Vie en Rose, I think I would create various fantasy worlds and always use something pink as the starting point (It's part of their name after all). Maybe a pink Cadillac or a pink pony?

  1. hi, i'm the designer of this window!! It's fun to see my work in your blog! I can explain you the simple concept, right now la vie en rose is not in the pink mood even if the name say rose (pink), the concept was for the back to school which feature younger style and p.j. with ballerina design and crest on the sleeves. The cats was part of this concept and is also featured as a print on some p.j.'s.
The theme of this year first collection was ballerina.
which is why the ballerina slippers on the back wall (which is the same crest on the end of each sleeves), the cats is dressed as a ballerina also (we always get a plush every season's to match the concept) and all colors picked in the window feature colors from the collection.
hope the concept is more clear to you!
you should come back to montreal to see the holiday picture! The concept will be amazing but always very simple!
to see the new holiday window, please visit the store at 970 ste-Catherine west around the 10th of november, the window will be there for 2 months but will have a clothing change around the 7th of december.
thanks. tommy from la vie en rose
