A pile of gray cats wearing tutus

window display boutique La Vie en Rose Montreal
A couple days ago, I was walking down Ste-Catherine street in Montreal, and noticed this neat window display. I've always been interested in the design aesthetics of commercial windows and love to see creative displays.

This one, from La Vie en Rose, stopped me right in my tracks: a pile of gray cats wearing a purple tutu under mannequins. I wonder what was the inspiration behind this one and what's the message (if there is one). Also why did they chose purple as opposed to pink in their color scheme? (La Vie en Rose loosely translates to Life in Pink in French) Why the ballerina shoes in the back? Why the cats?

In any case, window displays sound like a fun job, especially if you get "carte blanche". If given the opportunity to design for La Vie en Rose, I think I would create various fantasy worlds and always use something pink as the starting point (It's part of their name after all). Maybe a pink Cadillac or a pink pony?

Diesel Denim Gallery : Nature Factory

Suppose Design Office has created an original space for the Diesel Denim Gallery in Aoyama, Japan. It's a place where where fashion, art, design and architecture interact with one another. The gallery supports emerging artists by providing free space for them to showcase their work.

Nature Factory is the title of the installation this year. It includes several white pipes imitating trees and growing branches, creating a stunning effect from inside and outside. It's fascinating how a simple object like a plastic pipe can create such an innovative space and how plastic becomes "natural". The lights placed above the pipes on the ceiling also create a very nice shadow effect, just like branches under the sun. The abundance of pipes on the ceiling also gives the effect of being under a vine.

There are currently only two locations for these avant-garde Diesel Denim Galleries : Tokyo and New York. Diesels stores are also rare in Canada, thereare currently only two Canadian stores : one in Montreal and the other one in Toronto and the only Canadian Flagship store is in Montreal. I think we could use a bit more in Canada.

Pink and green visual display

I recently had the opportunity to make a visual display for a modern furniture store in Ottawa and I wanted to share the results. Using the furniture, props and accessories available, this little space was transformed into a fun and whimsical space that's very appropriate for spring. The mirrors reflect the lights and brightens the space. The branches add some dynamism to the portrait and the flowers and butterflies add some softness. I think it turned out pretty good.

Amazing stairs in New York Armani Boutique

Isn't this space just mind blowing? Recently completed in New York city, this is the home of an Armani store, designed by Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas of Fuksas. I am just in awe with the design of the stairs, which is unmistakeably the focal point of the space. I just love the way it wraps around all floors in a very chaotic way and the various shapes the stairs seem to take depending on your point of view. It's a very dynamic concept. Definitely a space I would love to experience. I wonder if some producer will think about using this in a sci-fi movie.
